Among Staunton patterns, the Colombian is the collector’s pick - famous for its knights: deeply cut, expressive, carved by hand with real sculptural character.
All 34 pieces - sixteen per side, plus two extra queens for pawn promotion - are turned and carved from boxwood and golden rosewood. Weighted bases and green felt pads give them the planted, silent feel serious players expect.
The board is built to match: golden rosewood (sheesham) and maplewood, hand-polished under a lacquered finish, 48 × 48 cm with regulation 2-inch squares.
The proportions matter. A 9.7 cm king on 5.08 cm squares is true tournament geometry - pieces stand clear of one another, the position reads at a glance, and the set plays as well as it displays. Club night on Thursday, centerpiece the rest of the week.
