1950 Dubrovnik Bobby Fischer Chess Set Lacquered Boxwood 3.7” With Board

In 1950, a new chess pattern debuted at the Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik - rounder, calmer, and more modern than the Staunton. It became the design Bobby Fischer famously favored, and the one he chose for his 1992 rematch against Spassky.

This edition takes that heritage somewhere no factory set can follow: every piece is finished by hand in pyrography. An artisan burns the ornament into the boxwood - flame-darkened grounds, bright floral detail - then seals it under gloss lacquer. Fire never burns the same way twice, so no two pieces, and no two sets, are identical.

Beneath the artistry, the geometry stays faithful: a 94 mm king with the low, wide Dubrovnik stance, sixteen pieces per side, and two extra queens for pawn promotion - 34 chessmen in all.

The board matches the scale: 55 × 55 cm in black-dyed poplar and white erable (maple), with generous 55 mm squares that give the wide Dubrovnik bases room to breathe. Full club-table size, and the complete set weighs in at 4.25 kg.
